Franklin Lakes was incorporated in 1922 and covers almost 10 square miles. About 11,000 people live here, in roughly 4,050 homes. That works out to around 400 homes per square mile, far fewer than in neighboring boroughs such as Midland Park, which has about 1,800.
The borough grew quickly in the postwar years: from 375 residents in 1900 to 7,550 by 1970, including a 127.7 percent jump in the 1960s alone. It has several lake communities, among them Crystal Lakes, Bakers Pond, Blauvelt Lakes, Shadow Lake and Hopper Lake.
Fewer houses per square mile usually means more room on each lot, which is what a custom build or a large addition needs. It also means the first conversation is about your lot: its size, its shape and what the zoning allows on it.
